Ankle Joint Injury

With its many ligaments and tendons, the ankle joint is very prone to injury. Especially athletes often have to deal with ankle joint injuries. These range from ligament stretching and torn ligaments to fractures and combinations of various injuries.

For those affected, an ankle joint injury usually means first of all a sporting time-out, as the damaged structures need time to heal. If an ankle joint injury of any kind occurs, the PECH rule (rest, ice, compression = pressure, lifting up) is always considered the “first aid measure”. A doctor will then examine the foot to find out what type of injury is present.

The vast majority of ankle injuries can be treated conservatively. The therapy for those affected then consists of regular physiotherapy in combination with other forms of therapy, in addition to time off for sports and, if necessary, wearing a suitable splint. Even if an operation becomes necessary, a good subsequent rehabilitation is just as important for the success of the healing as the operation itself. A team of doctors and therapists will then draw up an individual rehab plan for the patient with the aim of making the ankle fully functional again, so that the patient can resume his or her accustomed everyday life.
