Application for conjunctivitis
Bepanthen® eye drops are very well suited for the treatment of a so-called keratoconjunctivitis sicca (conjunctivitis). This type of conjunctivitis is not infectious but can be caused by various causes that disturb the tear film. The consequences are dry eyes and irritation of the conjunctiva.
Redness, a burning or foreign body sensation, itching, reddening of the eyelids and blurred vision can be the consequences. Tear substitutes such as Bepanthen® eye drops are the first choice for the medical treatment of such conjunctivitis. Also allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with Bepanthen® eye drops. The situation is different with infectious conjunctivitis. These usually require antibiotic therapy.
Effect
Bepanthen® eye drops contain two active ingredients that help to relieve the symptoms of dry eyes: dexpanthenol and sodium hyaluronate. The active ingredient dexpanthenol is a precursor of vitamin B, a so-called provitamin. It accumulates well in the area of application, increases the moisture retention capacity of the eyes and provides additional care.
Furthermore, dexpanthenol has anti-itching, anti-inflammatory and wound healing promoting properties and thus effectively soothes the eyes. These effects of dexpanthenol also explain why it is not only used in eye drops but also in various ointments, skin creams, shampoos, nasal sprays and contact lens cleaning products. The second active ingredient contained in Bepanthen® eye drops is sodium hyaluronate. Due to its water-binding properties, this sodium salt of hyaluronic acid forms a stable and protective film on the cornea and thus acts as a substitute for the lack of tear fluid. In combination with each other, these active ingredients can therefore effectively stabilise the tear film and thus also alleviate the discomfort caused by dry eyes.
Side effects
In general, Bepanthen® eye drops are very well tolerated and are therefore widely and frequently used. However, in rare cases side effects may occur. Incompatibility or hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients can lead to irritation, redness and in very rare cases to contact allergies.
Immediately after using the eye drops, visual acuity may be slightly impaired. This is usually only of short duration. Nevertheless, no machines should be operated or motor vehicles driven during this time. Furthermore, slight irritation of the eye may occasionally occur immediately after the application of Bepanthen eye drops. In extremely rare cases, corneal injuries and regular use of Bepanthen eye drops can lead to the formation of extensive calcium plates on the cornea due to a phosphate buffer and calcium salts contained in the cornea.
Application
Bepanthen-Augentropfen® are available both as single-dose bottles and as multi-dose bottles. The application differs only slightly. Application of Bepanthen-Augentropfen® in single-dose containers: First of all, a single single-dose container must be separated from the rest.
It is important to ensure that the other containers are not damaged, otherwise they must be discarded. Then the container is opened by twisting – not pulling – the neck of the bottle. For application, the head is now placed in the neck.
The view should be directed upwards. With one hand the lower eyelid is pulled slightly away from the eye and with the other hand a drop is carefully applied into the conjunctival sac of the eye. Now close your eyes slowly so that the liquid can be distributed evenly over the eye.
You should make sure that you never touch the eye with the bottle. Application of Bepanthen eye drops in the multi-dose bottle: To open the bottle, pull the prefabricated tab of the bottle neck so that the safety ring is removed. Now the cap can be removed and the eye drops can be applied analogous to the application in the single-dose container.
It is important not to touch the bottle opening with your hands or eye. Drops left on the bottle opening should be removed by gently tapping on the bottom of the bottle. Now put the cap back on.
