Associated symptoms

In addition to the annoying itching on the palate, other symptoms can also occur in connection with this. Often the throat area not only itches, but also burns or the itching turns into a burning sensation. This combination is often found in colds, since the mucous membrane of the throat and palate is damaged by the invading pathogens.

At the beginning this manifests itself in the symptoms already described. Burning of the palate can also lead to the above-mentioned symptoms. A runny nose is one of the most frequent accompanying symptoms of itchy palate.

Both an allergy and a cold can be the cause. While allergy-induced nasal runny nose is practically always watery, a cold can also cause yellowish-green nasal discharge. This can then be a sign of a bacterial infection.

The sore throat mentioned several times before also often occurs in combination or as a result of an itchy palate and throat area. Here, the pain is an expression of clear damage to the mucous membrane cells of the throat. They hardly occur in the context of the allergy, but are rather a sign of a beginning cold.

However, it can become dangerous if the palate itches and hurts immediately after the consumption of certain foods. This then indicates a food allergy. Frequently, this can lead to a swelling of the affected regions, which in extreme cases can lead to respiratory distress.

Diagnosis

An allergic cause of itching of the palate can easily be diagnosed during a visit to the doctor. Many ENT, dermatologists and also some general practitioners offer the so-called prick test. In this test, possible allergy-causing substances, for example plant pollen, animal hair or extracts from food, are dripped onto the skin of the forearm in dissolved form. The skin is then slightly incised at these points.

If an allergy exists, itching and wheals form after a short time at the site of the respective substance. A cold as the cause of the itchy palate is also easy to detect. In this case, the doctor shines a light into the patient’s throat and in case of an infection, a redness or even swelling of the mucous membranes and tonsils can be detected.
