At what age should I start a health care program?

Health care begins, as it is already indicated from the previous sections, already before the birth. In order to maintain and improve the health on a long-term basis it is naturally advisable to begin as early as possible with the appropriate health care and to take up the achievements of the health insurance companies. In particular if familial pre-existing conditions are known or if there is an increased risk for other reasons, one should follow the age recommendations for the various preventive measures and go to regular check-ups.

What does the health insurance company pay?

The health insurance company covers far more costs for health care than most people probably assume. The following early detection and preventive examinations are part of the range of services offered by German health insurance companies: The achievements can and should however not have to be taken up by the policyholders.

  • One-time consultation and annual check-ups for women aged 20 and older for early detection of cervical cancer
  • From the age of 30, annual check-ups for early detection of breast cancer
  • Check-up 35, which is performed every 2 years from the age of 35 for the early detection of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and kidney disease
  • From the age of 35, a check-up every 2 years for early detection of skin cancer
  • For men aged 45 years and older, an annual examination for early detection of prostate cancer
  • From the age of 50 onwards, the health insurance company pays for an annual test for the early detection of colorectal cancer and for women additionally every 2 years a mammography
  • From the age of 55 years a colonoscopy (colonoscopy) is paid
  • For men over 65 years of age, a single ultrasound examination of the abdominal artery
  • In addition to these services, the health insurance company also pays for many vaccinations, antenatal check-ups, examinations for children and adolescents (U1 to J1), dental check-ups and some health courses are offered that are either completely covered or largely subsidized.
