At what point is vomiting dangerous for infants?

The vomiting of the infant becomes dangerous whenever the condition of the youngest child deteriorates to such an extent that life-threatening complications can occur. If the toddler vomits frequently and, for example, a fever or diarrhoea also occurs, he or she loses an excessive amount of water via the stool, the vomit and the sweat, so that the loss of fluid can quickly lead to a lack of fluid. In addition, many minerals/electrolytes are also lost with the fluid, so that there can be dangerous shifts in the mineral balance. If the infant becomes cloudy, i.e. appears tired, sleepy and listless, immediate action is required and a doctor should be consulted immediately. Any vomiting after a fall or an accident should also be classified as potentially dangerous and in need of clarification, as it could result from injuries to the head or brain.

When do infants have to see a doctor if they vomit?

A doctor should always be consulted if vomiting occurs more than once or if other symptoms occur which additionally affect the infant. These include concomitant fever or diarrhea, conspicuous weakness in drinking or refusal to drink or eat. Abdominal pains of the infant should also encourage a visit to the doctor, as should vomiting after a fall or accident. If the infant appears remarkably listless and tired, absolute caution is required and a visit to the doctor is essential.

Duration of vomiting in infants

How long vomiting lasts in small children cannot be said in general. Depending on the cause, the vomiting can last more or less long. Harmless vomiting, which can occur, for example, in the case of stomach upset after eating the wrong food, should disappear within a day, but the vomiting lasts longer and is accompanied by other symptoms if a doctor is consulted. This doctor can then decide whether a medication for nausea and vomiting should be given and, if necessary, also search for the cause in order to fight it adequately and avoid complications.
