Baby hiccups
Hiccups are more common in babies and toddlers than in adults. The causes of hiccups are the same in children and adults, but swallowing and breathing is not yet as well rehearsed in babies and toddlers as in adults. In individual cases, this means that children swallow a larger amount of air than adults, for example when eating.
This swallowed air causes the stomach to swell, which can lead to pressure on one or both of the phrenic nerves supplying the diaphragm, which can lead to persistent and prolonged hiccups in babies. As a rule, no treatment is necessary. The hiccups usually disappear as quickly as they came. If hiccups are present in babies for several days in a row, a pediatrician should be consulted to find out the exact cause of the hiccups.
Homeopathy for hiccups
There are some homeopathic approaches to treat persistent hiccups. An attempt to treat hiccups can be made with the preparation Cyclamen europaeum. A few globules of this preparation can be taken several times a day.
A hiccup-relieving effect is also attributed to nux vomica. The background to this is that it is assumed that hiccups are always caused by increased stomach acidity and excessive bloating of the stomach. This is treated with nux vomica.
This preparation should also be taken several times a day, e.g. with meals. Homeopathic medication must be taken regularly and for several days in a row in order to achieve a possible effect. However, there are no studies on the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines.
