Benzalkonium Chloride Tampons

Products

Benzalkonium chloride tampons are approved in many countries (No Gynex). Benzaltex tampons are no longer available.

Structure and properties

Benzalkonium chloride is a mixture of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chlorides whose alkyl moiety consists of C8– to C18 chains. It is a white to yellowish white powder or is present as gelatinous, yellowish white, hygroscopic pieces that are soapy to the touch and very soluble in water. A strong foam is formed when shaken.

Effects

Benzalkonium chloride (ATC D08AJ01) has spermicidal/sperm immobilizing and antiseptic properties. Although the active ingredient is antimicrobial, it does not provide adequate protection against sexually transmitted diseases. Additional condoms must be used for this purpose. A contraceptive effect is present, but it is worse than with the use of hormonal contraceptives. The method is considered to be moderately reliable. Therefore, pregnancy cannot be excluded.

Indications for use

Intravaginal contraception in women.

Dosage

According to the package leaflet. The contraceptive effect starts immediately and lasts for 24 hours. The tampon must be removed after 24 hours at the latest.

Contraindications

Benzalkonium chloride is contraindicated in hypersensitivity and during pregnancy. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Common soaps and bubble baths inactivate benzalkonium chloride and should not be used concurrently or beforehand.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local irritation and hypersensitivity reactions.
