Breakthrough of the wisdom teeth

Introduction – The wisdom tooth is coming

The growth of teeth or their eruption occurs at a similar time in most people and usually fluctuates only by a few months. However, the breakthrough time of wisdom teeth can only be predicted inaccurately. Some patients do not have wisdom teeth at all – others have germinal systems for all four wisdom teeth.

Before the wisdom teeth break through, an X-ray should be taken to see how the teeth are positioned in the jaw. In some cases the teeth do not break through. Sometimes the growth stops during the eruption so that only a part of the crown is visible in the mouth. If the eruption of the wisdom teeth goes without complications in some people, others suffer from severe pain and inflammation that lasts for several months.

At what age do wisdom teeth break through?

The average age at which wisdom teeth erupt is about 16 years. Girls tend to develop their teeth earlier. Her wisdom teeth can also erupt at the age of 15.

The timing also strongly depends on the age of the child’s teeth. If the 2nd large molar is erupted early, the wisdom teeth will probably come earlier. They then break through approximately four years after the 2nd large molar, the so-called 12-year molar. This might also be of interest to you: The change of teeth in children

Duration of wisdom tooth eruption

The duration of the eruption of wisdom teeth varies from person to person. In some cases, the eruption is completely painless. It is possible that they begin to break through and then pause again.

This prolongs the time span of the eruption. In addition, the eruption can stagnate completely so that the wisdom tooth does not appear at all or only partially and then no more growth takes place. Since no tooth has broken through at this point in the jaw, it is difficult for a displaced tooth to penetrate the thicker bone layer.

Massage with a finger, preferably with the index finger and thumb, can speed up the breakthrough. It is important that the fingers are clean and washed, otherwise the gums in the area of the wisdom teeth can become inflamed. The massage should not be too firm, because otherwise the breakthrough can also be hindered or slowed down.

It is recommended to gently massage the bone from all sides. The wisdom teeth break through faster if there is enough space. So you can ask at the regular dentist’s check-up if there is enough space. The dentist can make an X-ray image, which gives information about the anatomical conditions.
