Changes in weight | What happens when you stop taking the pill?

Changes in weight

Already at the beginning of taking the pill, most young girls show significant weight changes. Especially when taking more highly concentrated hormonal contraceptives, many women can gain considerable weight. Since the frequency of prescribing the so-called “minipill” has increased significantly, the number of cases of weight changes after the start of taking the pill has fallen drastically.

Women who start taking the minipill even frequently report that they have lost weight since they started taking it. For most young women, however, the Pill has had no effect on weight at all since the hormone concentration was changed. Changes in weight that are associated with starting to take the pill are mainly caused by an intervention in the natural hormone balance.

The question of what happens when you stop taking the pill cannot be answered in general terms with regard to a possible change in weight for this reason. Basically, when you stop taking the pill you may gain weight. Even significant weight loss can often be observed after the end of the pill.

Weight changes in the form of weight gain can usually be directly related to the hormonal change. Due to the sudden lack of hormones, many women tend to develop ravenous hunger pangs and therefore put on a few kilos. However, since the pill can also cause increased water retention, there is also the possibility of losing weight if you stop taking the pill. The reason for this is the fact that the excess fluid is flushed out of the tissue and excreted via the kidneys.

Skin changes

In addition to weight changes, the typical side effects of the pill include effects on the skin and hair structure. For this reason, if you stop taking the pill, pronounced skin changes may occur. The main reason for this is that both the skin surface and the hair suddenly need completely different care due to the hormonal changes. Women who have experienced positive changes in their skin appearance as a result of taking the pill must also expect that skin changes may occur again after the synthetic hormones have been discontinued. In particular, the reappearance of pimples and acne can often be observed when the pill is discontinued.
