Connective tissue
Spraying connective tissue onto the lips is a technique that uses a substance produced naturally in the body. In addition to the extraction from the own body, there is also the possibility to use connective tissue produced in the laboratory, which is similar to human tissue. As with the injection with own fat, it is also very advantageous that no allergies can occur.
Animal connective tissue can also be used and is not broken down as quickly as human tissue, but there is a very high risk of allergies. An allergy test is always necessary before any intervention with animal tissue. In the past, this method was even more common, but has now been replaced by human connective tissue or other substances.
Synthetic substances
Synthetic substances have the advantage over the natural ones that the lips are not only temporary, but permanent. Of course, this is also a disadvantage, because bad results or errors in treatment are harder to correct. The synthetic substances, once they have been introduced into the body, cannot be removed again.
For this reason, there is “no going back” once such an intervention has been performed. Allergies and foreign body reactions, which can manifest themselves in the form of granulomas and abscesses, are the risk factors of these substances. The most established and frequently used method is the use of silicone oil, which is inserted into the lips with a thin needle.
Allergies are rare. The effect of lip injection is not only the mass of the silicone, but also an increase in mass through connective tissue that forms around the silicone oil. This is also the reason why the desired effect does not occur immediately, but must be waited until the tissue has formed.
It is important to inject the silicone oil deep enough into the lips, otherwise the surface may become irregular. There are a large number of new developments; unfortunately, clinical trials are often lacking. One example of such modern substances are small plastic spheres coated with collagen foreign to the body.
This collagen is broken down by the body and then the plastic spheres made of polymethyl methacrylate are integrated into the lip tissue’s own collagen so that the desired fullness of the lips is permanently guaranteed. However, this can lead to severe allergic reactions and abscess formation. In addition, the balls can cause pain if they are in the wrong place.
