Diagnosis | Itching of the anus

Diagnosis

After itching can have a variety of causes, which is why a specialist or a so-called proctologist should be consulted if it occurs repeatedly or persists. An initial assessment of the symptoms can be made based on the patient’s medical history (anamnesis). Furthermore, a proctological examination is carried out.

The anal area is scanned and the skin of the anal region is closely examined. If necessary, it may be necessary to perform an endoscopic examination. In this way, various diseases such as haemorrhoids or anal fissures can be clearly diagnosed and possibly treated.

In addition, a tissue sample (biopsy) can be taken, which can be important, for example, if cancer is suspected. In some cases a smear is taken to detect a possible infection of the anal area with bacteria, viruses or fungi in a subsequent laboratory examination. As a rule, a stool sample is also examined, which can be used to diagnose a pinworm infection, for example. A blood test can also be useful if there is a suspicion of systemic diseases or a possible vitamin deficiency.

Prognosis and duration

Since there are many different causes for itching of the anus, the intensity and duration of the symptoms can also vary considerably depending on the cause. In some cases, the unpleasant itching only occurs for a short time, whereas in other cases the itching can last for several days and can be felt as very painful due to additional burning. In addition, depending on the cause of the anal itching, numerous other accompanying symptoms can also occur, such as an irritative skin rash, which often prolongs the healing process.
