Diagnosis
The diagnosis of oral thrush is usually made only by a normal examination by a doctor. He usually detects the typical signs of mouth rot with the naked eye. If these are not clear enough, he has the possibility to check the patient’s blood for defence cells against the virus, or to cultivate the virus in a targeted manner (virus cultivation) and detect it.Normal aphthae should also not be taken for the signs of mouth rot.

Since the first signs of a disease with mouth rot are often not specific, but rather manifest themselves in general feeling of illness, such as weakness and nausea, most patients first consult their family doctor. If the typical changes in the mucous membranes of the mouth rot occur, however, the dentist is the specialist who can usually assign the changes to their cause and make the diagnosis.
