Diagnosis | Systole too high – Is that dangerous?

Diagnosis

If there is an elevated systolic blood pressure, there are several treatment options: Since all medications are associated with severe side effects, patients should first try to improve their lifestyle before resorting to drug therapy. If the excessive systole is caused by an existing disease, such as hyperthyroidism, this disease must first be treated. In most cases, the high systole usually disappears.

  • Healthy lifestyle: Smoking, alcohol and excessive meat consumption can cause damage to the blood vessels, leading to an excessively high systole. Especially in primary hypertension, where the exact cause of the disease is unclear, the patient should try to actively do something against the too high systole by a healthy lifestyle. Through endurance sports, healthy nutrition and consciously avoiding stressful situations, many patients can often get a grip on their excessive systole.
  • Beta-blockers: If a change of lifestyle is not enough to change the too high systole, there are drugs that should be used as a last resort.

Beta blockers block, as the name already says, the beta receptors at the heart. This causes the heart to stop pumping so strongly that it cannot cause an excessive systole.

  • Diuretics: These drain the body and thus reduce the blood volume of the This avoids too much stress on the heart due to a too large blood volume.
  • ACE Inhibitors: These are drugs which ensure that a system is inhibited by various hormones. By inhibiting this system, the blood pressure is automatically regulated downwards, which leads to a lowering of the systole.
  • Calcium channel blockers: These block the calcium channels in the heart and thus ensure that the heart beats with less effort.

In isolated systolic hypertension, the reduction of the systolic value is particularly important, since in the long run the increased pressure overloads the vessel walls.

Various home remedies for lowering blood pressure have proven to be effective. Generous physical exercise such as Nordic walking, jogging or swimming is particularly effective. This can lower the systolic value by about 5 to 10 mmHg.

A balanced diet is also very important. Care should be taken to ensure a low intake of salt, as an increased intake can lead to an isolated rise in systolic blood pressure (less than 6 grams per day). When preparing meals, doctors recommend the generous use of herbs.

Fresh onions, celery and garlic are also said to have a blood pressure-lowering effect. Traditional Kneipp treatments can also be used. Certain homeopathic substances are able to lower blood pressure.

Thereby remedies such as Adonis rose (Adonis Vernalis), the Indian hemp Apocynum, Aranin (healing effect of the black night spider) or the Arnica Montanum can be used. Especially the latter belongs to the traditional standard therapy for high blood pressure.
