Structure and properties
DMT or ,-dimethyltryptamine (C12H16N2, Mr = 188.3 g/mol) is structurally related to serotonin. It is an indole derivative found in the secretion of toad and in various plants (e.g. ). DMT is an important ingredient in ayahuasca.
Effects
DMT has hallucinogenic and psychoactive properties. The effects are based on binding to serotonin receptors and interaction with other neurotransmitter systems (e.g., sigma receptor).
Abuse
DMT is abused as a hallucinogenic narcotic.
