Duration of nerve inflammation in different parts of the body
The cause of nerve inflammation of the ribs is often shingles, which is accompanied by blistering and redness on the skin surface and pain. Shingles usually heals completely in 2-4 weeks. To avoid complications, treatment should be carried out within the first 2-3 days after the onset of symptoms.
Aciclovir, a viral static inhibitor, is used as the standard medication. Possible complications are persistent pain for 4 weeks or a generalisation of the disease with involvement of internal organs. In the face the pain is often very severe.
They can be triggered by chewing, swallowing or a draft on the facial skin. Pain in the teeth is also possible. The cause is often an infection of a cranial nerve which supplies the face, the so-called trigeminal neuralgia.
In such a case the therapy is carried out with medication. Virustatics help with an inflammation caused by viruses. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial inflammation.
As a rule, a consequent therapy does not result in a very bad improvement. However, with an inflammation of the nerves in the face, there is a risk that the pain becomes chronic, i.e. persists, despite successful treatment of the inflammation. Therefore, early therapy is important.
A common cause is radiculitis, an inflammation of the nerve root caused by viruses or bacteria or Guillain-Barre syndrome. Depending on the pathogen, the duration of the inflammation varies. In Guillan-Barre syndrome, after a previous infection, e.g. a respiratory infection, the patient’s own nerves are attacked by the immune system and an inflammatory reaction occurs.
There is a classic course. For two weeks the symptoms worsen, for two weeks the symptoms remain constant and for two weeks the symptoms regress. In a few cases, significantly longer courses are also possible.
The symptoms of nerve inflammation in the leg usually subside within a few days to weeks and have a positive course. Often the sciatic nerve is affected. This is a large nerve that runs from the lower back to the legs.
It can also be irritated for mechanical reasons. In such a case, surgery may be necessary to relieve the symptoms.
