Duration | Torn ligament at the finger

Duration

The time it takes for a torn ligament on the finger to heal varies greatly depending on the extent of the injury. As a general rule, an immobilisation period of at least three weeks should be observed to allow the ends of the torn ligament to grow back. However, it can take up to three months before the ligament is completely stable, pain-free and functional again. However, the duration depends on the therapy of the torn ligament and is positively influenced by good cooperation of the patient.

Forecast

Normally, a torn ligament heals without consequences after sufficient protection, correct immobilization and follow-up treatment, provided there are no serious concomitant injuries to the finger. Nevertheless, symptoms such as swelling and pain can persist for several weeks. However, the prognosis for good healing and mobility of the finger after torn ligaments is still good.

If no therapy is undertaken, instability and limited movement of the finger may well occur. Often the finger feels stiff after a torn ligament. During treatment, the affected finger is fixed in an extended position for a longer period of time.

The joint may stiffen. Therefore, physiotherapy with specific exercises after removal of the splint is important. One should ask the attending physician for exercises and perform them regularly.

If the feeling of stiffness occurs significantly later, you can visit the doctor again and ask for an examination. Depending on the cause of the stiffness, for example pseudoarthrosis, different treatment options are possible. At the same time, a torn ligament in the finger can lead to a stiff finger if the torn ligament is not treated. An untreated torn ligament in a finger greatly increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis in the corresponding finger.

Prophylaxis

Especially in sports a comprehensive prophylaxis of torn ligaments is practiced. This includes stretching exercises and the stabilization of the finger with a tape bandage, which of course can also be helpful in everyday life apart from sports. Apart from that, there is nothing more to do than to take good care of the fingers.
