Emedastine

Products

Emedastine is commercially available in the form of eye drops (Emadine). It has been approved in many countries since 1999.

Structure and properties

Emedastine (C17H26N4O, Mr = 302.41 g/mol) is a benzimidazole and a methyl diazepine derivative. It is present in drugs as emedastinidifumarate, a white powder that is soluble in water.

Effects

Emedastine (ATC S01GX06) has antihistamine and antiallergic properties. The effects are due to competitive antagonism at histamine H1 receptors.

Indication

For the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.

Dosage

According to the professional information. Adults usually place one drop in the affected eye two to four times daily. See also under Administering eye drops.

Interactions

No drug-drug interactions have been reported to date. However, other eye drops should be administered at a time interval.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local eye discomfort such as burning, stinging, and itching. Rarely, systemic discomfort such as headache, feeling weak, dream disturbance, skin rash, or disturbance of taste sensations occurs.
