Epinastine is commercially available in the form of eye drops (Relestat). It has been approved in many countries since 2004.
Structure and properties
Epinastine (C16H15N3, Mr = 249.31 g/mol) is present in drugs as epinastine hydrochloride. It is an azepine and imidazole derivative.
Effects
Epinastine (ATC S01GX10) has antihistamine, antiallergic, and mast cell stabilizing properties. The effects are based on competitive antagonism at histamine H1 receptors.
Indications
For symptomatic treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
Dosage
According to the package insert. Usually 1 drop is placed in each eye twice daily. See also under Administering eye drops.

Interactions
To date, no interactions with other drugs none are known.
Adverse effects
The most common possible adverse effects include local reactions such as eye burning and occasionally other eye complaints such as increased blood flow, eye irritation, itching, and sensitivity to light.
