Erysipelas: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by erysipelas (erysipelas):

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Elephantiasis – abnormal enlargement of a body part due to lymphatic congestion.
  • Lymphedema – increase in tissue fluid caused by damage to the lymphatic system.
  • Recurrent erysipelas (≥ 2 episodes in three years).
  • Sinus vein thrombosis (SVT) – occlusion of a cerebral sinus (large venous blood vessels of the brain arising from duraduplications) by a thrombus (blood clot); clinical presentation: headache, congestive papules, and epileptic seizures (in facial erysipelas)

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Toxic shock syndrome (TSS; toxic shock syndrome) – rapidly progressive inflammation caused by a toxin from the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus.

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Myositis (muscle inflammation)
  • Necrotizing fasciitis – foudroyant life-threatening infection of the skin, subcutis (subcutaneous tissue), and fascia with progressive gangrene; often involves patients with diabetes mellitus or other conditions that lead to impaired circulation or lowered immune defenses

Further

  • Multi-organ failure (MODS, Multi organ dysfunction syndrome; MOF: Multi organ failure) – simultaneous or sequential failure or severe functional impairment of various vital organ systems of the body.
