Exercises | Physiotherapy for a difference in leg length

Exercises

Exercises with a leg length difference are especially important and should be performed regularly. In physiotherapy, a compensation of the oblique position can be achieved for a short time, but usually does not last long. With a separate training program, the patient can work on his problems himself.

Important here are exercises for mobilization in the pelvic area: Strengthening exercises should be adapted to the corresponding weak muscles. Accordingly, exercises such as unilateral knee bends, leg presses can be performed more often on one side and general leg training. In addition to the mobilization and strengthening exercises, stretching exercises are just as important.

The rear thigh muscles (ischiocrucial muscles) should be stretched so that the pelvis is not permanently pulled backwards and downwards, which would change the statics of the body. This musculature can be either: Likewise, the front thigh muscle should be taken into account in case of a leg length difference. If this is not stretchy, it pulls the pelvis forward and down.

Exercise for stretching the front thigh muscles: As a stretching exercise and simultaneously as a mobilization exercise, the patient places the heel of the affected leg on the thigh of the healthy leg and presses the thigh further into the movement of external rotation. This allows the hip to re-center and stretches the muscles in the buttocks area.

  • Pull heel towards buttocks
  1. Sitting on the Pezzi ball and circling the pelvis or forward and backward movements
  2. Sitting on a bench with the pelvis facing backwards, making sure that the pull really comes from the pelvis movement. The exercise should be performed from time to time in a sitting position.
  3. While lying down, push the heels out against each other so that the movement comes only from the pelvic/hip region
  1. In supine position with lifting the stretched leg to stretch
  2. Walk with your hands towards the ground while standing
  3. Put the leg on a raised platform and walk with the hand to the foot
