Eye drops containing vitamin A

In case of dry eyes, relief can be achieved with eye drops containing vitamin A on doctor’s orders. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, one drop is given into the eye 3 times a day up to once an hour. The drops contain a small amount of the vitamin, which can have a targeted effect on the eye.

However, the dosage is not so high that there is a risk of oversupply. Therefore, the eye drops can also be used in pregnant women. It can lead to short-term impairment of vision.

Caution is therefore required in road traffic and when operating machines. The eye drops must not be given to people who are hypersensitive to components of the drug. It is best to store the vials in a refrigerator box to protect them from light. Like all medicines, they should be kept out of the reach of children.

Vitamin A during pregnancy

In women, the need for vitamin A is slightly increased during pregnancy because the growing child has to be provided for. Vitamin A is important for normal growth and development of the child. A lack would have thus particularly fatal consequences and would lead for example to malformations of the child.However, caution is required when additionally administering vitamin A preparations, as it can easily lead to an oversupply (hypervitaminosis).

This also leads to growth disorders in the child as well as damage to the eyes, liver and skin. As long as no lack is proven, thus Vitamin A-containing food auxiliary means should be done without. Also the consumption of very vitamin A-rich food, such as liver, should be avoided during pregnancy. A supply of Provitamin A (also β-Carotin mentioned), as it is contained in vegetable sources, is however harmless, since the body converts it only when necessary into the effective Vitamin A and therefore no danger for a Hypervitaminose exists.
