Facial Swelling: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of facial swelling.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

  • What is your profession?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long has the swelling been present?
  • Is the swelling unilateral or bilateral?
  • Did it develop acutely or more slowly?
  • Have you noticed that the swelling gets bigger after eating?
  • Do you also have redness of the skin
  • Do you have pain in your face?
  • Do you have pain when tapping your teeth?
  • Have you noticed any other symptoms such as fever?
  • Have you noticed any discharge from the nose? What color is the discharge?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Have you lost body weight unintentionally in the recent past? If so, how many kilograms in what time?
  • Do you drink other or more caffeinated beverages? If so, how much of each?
  • Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol more often? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses of it per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, which drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (heart disease; infectious diseases; kidney disease; thyroid dysfunction; dental disease).

  • Radiotherapy
  • Vaccination status
  • Allergies
  • Environmental history
