Follow-up Vaccinations for Children and Adolescents

Recommended catch-up vaccination in children and adolescents who lack basic immunization (GI):

  • Unvaccinated person: use table for current age.
  • Partially vaccinated person: use table for age at first vaccination with the corresponding antigen.

a If a monovalent vaccine is used, this dose may be omitted. Note: When revaccinating children 12 months to <5 years of age who have already received 5- or 6-dose vaccines at <12 months of age, keep in mind that a 3-dose vaccine schedule is approved only with a minimum interval of 2 or 6 months from the previous 1st or 2nd dose, respectively. Thus, children who had received (i) 2 or (ii) 3 doses, each 1 month apart, will in any case receive (i) 2 more doses or (ii) one more dose of the 5- or 6-dose vaccine, respectively, for GI completion. It is explicitly stated that the 3-dose vaccination schedule is recommended by STIKO only for vaccination of children >12 months of age.

a Vaccination interval depends on vaccine or indication.b Booster vaccination 5 – 10 years after the last dose of basic immunization or after a previous booster vaccination.c Booster vaccination should be given at age 9- 17 years.d Pneumococcal vaccination is no longer recommended as a standard vaccination after age 24 months and will not be boostered.e After age 11 months. Catch-up vaccination of 5 and 6 vaccines in children 12 months to < 5 years of age. For catch-up or completion of the 5- and 6-dose vaccination at age > 12 months, the STIKO recommends a 3-dose vaccination schedule. However, it explicitly points out that the recommendation for the shortened schedule only applies from age > 12 months. However, because the vaccination intervals differ between the 1st and 2nd vaccine doses of the 3-dose vaccination schedule for the available 5-dose and 6-dose vaccines, according to the technical information, it is necessary to take into account the vaccine, the vaccine doses administered so far, and their vaccination intervals when preparing the vaccination schedule for the catch-up vaccination. The 3-dose vaccination schedule for Infanrix hexa and Hexyon is 0-2-6 months, that for Vaxelis and Infanrix-IPV+Hib is 0-1-6 months, and there is no approved 3-dose vaccination schedule for Pentavac…
