Fosamax®

ExplanationDefinition

Fosamax® is a drug for the treatment of osteoporosis (bone loss). It belongs to the group of bisphosphonates, which inhibit the activity of the body’s own osteoclasts (naturally occurring bone-degrading cells). Their bone-destroying influence is predominant in many women after menopause, which is why osteoporosis (bone loss) develops.

The consequences of osteoporosis can be bone fractures with only minor trauma caused by accidents. Fractures of the vertebral body and femoral neck are particularly common. Trade names: Manufacturer: MSD SHARP & DOHME GMBH Alternative preparations:

Active ingredient

4-amino-1-hydroxybutylidene diphosphonic acidFosamax® is a drug for the treatment of osteoporosis (bone loss) in postmenopausal women (post-menopausal women; estrogen deficiency). The aim is to prevent further bone loss and thus reduce the risk of a fractured vertebra or femoral neck.

Dosage form

TabletsFilm coated tablets

Effect

Fosamax® is stored after admission in the intestine partly in the bone, partly excreted over the kidneys. In the bone Fosamax® binds to certain proteins of osteoclasts and thereby inhibits them. The bone-degrading effect of the osteoclasts decreases. As a result, the bone-building activity predominates and osteoporosis decreases.

Application

Prolonged use of Fosamax® should not be taken without consulting your doctor. It should be taken in the morning. One recommendation is to take the medication before washing in the morning.

It should always be taken on the same day of the week. Fosamax® once a week 70 mg tablets must be taken (swallowed) on an empty stomach 30 minutes before any further food intake (food or drink) with a full glass of tap water (not mineral water). Do not chew or suck the tablet. An upright posture should be maintained for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication, so that the mucous membrane irritant effect of Fosamax® on the upper gastrointestinal tract is minimized by 70 mg tablets once a week. Do not lie down again!
