Frequently used antibiotics

Among the antibiotics that can be given is Flucloxacillin, which is contained in Staphylex, for example. It is administered in either 250mg or 500mg capsules. The maximum dose for adults is 12g, but an administration of about 3g is usually sufficient.

It is simply swallowed with a glass of water. As with any medication, you should read the package insert before taking it and contact a doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. The side effects of Flucloxacillin include

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Flatulence, diarrhea and stomach problems
  • Dry mouth and
  • Mucosa inflammations

Another commonly prescribed antibiotic is clindamycin.

This antibiotic is available in tablet form, as an ointment or as an infusion. Clindamycin is not suitable for people who have a known allergy to this antibiotic, suffer from asthma or kidney or liver dysfunction. During pregnancy Clindamycin should only be used as a reserve medication, alternative antibiotics should be considered. Like almost every drug, this antibiotic has possible side effects. These include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Diarrhea and flatulence
  • Circulatory collapse
  • Liver and kidney damage
