Functional disorders of the limbic system

Since the structures grouped together under the term “limbic system” are involved in a number of processing operations, disturbances of one or more parts of this system can be manifested by severe limitations of cognitive abilities. Especially the inability to assess emotional situations is attributed to dysfunctions in the limbic system. Furthermore, memory disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, narcolepsy, depression and phobias are usually based on functional disorders of the limbic system.

The exact assignment of individual diseases to a specific structure of the limbic system is not yet possible. Nevertheless, based on the current state of research, it is assumed that, for example, Alzheimer’s disease is based on direct damage to the hippocampus.
