Functional strength training | Physiotherapeutic follow-up treatment for breast cancer

Functional strength training

goals: Improvement of muscle development, in particular strength endurance in the affected arm, neck, shoulder and trunk muscles, edema prophylaxis, improvement of trunk symmetry and posture, bone development, earlier participation in everyday life Strength training after breast cancer can already begin in the early stages. Functional strength training is understood to mean that complex sequences of movements are used to train movements relevant to everyday life, several joints and muscle groups are used within one exercise sequence. Accordingly, when selecting exercises, not only the affected region is considered, but the whole body is included in the strength training.

Strength training strengthens the musculature, has a preventive effect with regard to the development of lymphedema, promotes the function of the affected arm and bone density and stabilizes the posture threatened by asymmetry. This creates the prerequisites for being able to cope with everyday movements earlier, and a more active lifestyle becomes possible more quickly. Regained participation in everyday life and work has a positive effect on the psyche. General principles: Training Equipment Endurance: Strength Training Equipment: Small Strength Training Equipment: small dumbbells, weight cuffs, theraband, elastic band, stick, pezzi ball

  • Progressive dynamic strength training
  • Repetition, series, holding time and increase of the exercises are to be determined individually after the strength test
  • Possible load : training with 60-80% of the maximum strength
  • Maximum 8-12 repetitions/exercises
  • 2-3 series, between the series 2-3 minutes break
  • Increase possible if the patient can easily perform 2-3 repetitions/series more
  • Strength training 2-3/week
  • During training, it is recommended to check the physiotherapist and/or a mirror
  • Movement extent depends on mobility, the pain threshold shows the movement limit
  • Breathing should be able to continue to flow calmly during the exercises, exhale to exertion
  • Equipment supported strength training is easier and safer, because the movement path is predetermined, the increase is exactly measurable
  • Increase, free training with weights or against tensile stress, (increase by increasing the weights can be better measured than determining the resistance against Thera- or elastic band tension)
  • Since the chemotherapy may limit the sensation in the fingertips, toes, hands and/or feet (polyneuropathy), it must be noted that the patient may not be able to feel if and how the dumbbell is in the hand or if one-legged standing is not possible
  • Strength training is prohibited in case of bone metastases, infections, high blood pressure, severe, painful edema and during chemo-cycles
  • Cross Walker for warming up and endurance training
  • Bicycle ergometer for warming up and endurance training
  • Latissimus pull, concentric and eccentric under shoulder blade control
  • Breast press in and out
  • Overhead mast
  • Back muscle trainer
  • Rotation upper body against resistance
  • Starting position: Sitting on a stool in front of a mirror, legs slightly apart, upper body upright Exercise: Raise a stick (Theraband, Elastiband) above the head with inhalation, lower with exhalation Increase: Pull the stick or band apart
  • Increase: perform the movement from a standing position, while lifting the arms in the squat, shifting the buttocks backwards, go only so far that the kneecaps do not advance further than the height of the toes
  • Starting position: Sit on a stool in front of the mirror, legs slightly apart, upper body upright Exercise: Pull the stick or band behind (if possible) or on your head to inhale Increase: Pull the stick or band apart while doing so Increase: Perform the movement from a standing position, while lifting the arms into the squat
  • Starting position: Sitting on a stool in front of a mirror, legs slightly apart, upper body upright Exercise: Lift a stick (Theraband, elastic band) above the head with the inhalation, while exhaling hold it, while inhaling tilt the upper body to the side, while exhaling lower the stick Increase: Pull the stick or band apart
  • Starting position: Sitting on a stool in front of a mirror, legs slightly apart, upper body upright Exercise: Lift one stick (Theraband, elastic band) above the head with the inhalation, while exhaling, while inhaling turn the upper body backwards with a view over the shoulder, while exhaling lower the stick Increase: Pull the stick or band apart while doing so.
  • Starting position: Sitting on a stool in front of the mirror, legs slightly apart, upper body upright, grasping a Thera or elastic band behind the back with one hand up, other hand down on the band Exercise: Pull the band up towards the ceiling behind the head, the lower hand fixed Increase: The lower hand pulls down at the same time
