Hard Grease

Products

Hard grease is available as open goods in pharmacies and drugstores. Specialty retailers can order it from specialized suppliers. Many different types exist.

Structure and properties

Hard fat consists of a mixture of mono-, di- and triglycerides obtained by esterification of fatty acids of natural origin with glycerol or by transesterification of fats of natural origin. The different types differ in melting temperature, hydroxyl value and saponification value. Hard fat is a white, brittle mass of waxy consistency that is practically insoluble in water. When heated to 50°C, the substance melts to a colorless to slightly yellowish liquid. Hard grease is usually odorless, tasteless, and greasy to the touch.

Effects

Hard fat has emulsifying properties. When administered rectally, the suppository melts and releases the active ingredients.

Indications for use

Hard fat is commonly used as a base material for suppositories and vaginal suppositories (ovules). Less commonly, it may also be included in other dosage forms such as creams or in fat sticks.
