Hoarseness (Dysphonia): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of dysphonia (hoarseness).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your relatives?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Are you exposed to harmful working substances in your profession?

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long has the hoarseness been present? Has it changed? Become stronger?
  • Do other symptoms such as fever or lymph node enlargement occur in addition to hoarseness?
  • Do you have shortness of breath?*
  • Do you suffer from dysphagia?
  • Do you have headaches?
  • Have you had a cold recently/are you currently having a cold?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Is your voice frequently overloaded?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (respiratory diseases; reflux disease (heartburn); thyroid disease).
  • Operations
  • Allergies
  • Environmental history (irritant gases)
  • Drug history (cromoglicic acid)
