Home remedies

Mild toothache does not necessarily have to be treated by taking potent painkillers. In many cases the use of simple household remedies is sufficient to provide relief for the patient concerned. To the most popular household remedies against toothache belong different herbal vapors.

Acute toothache can be relieved by the treatment of special vapors consisting of juniper and coltsfoot. In this way, it is often possible to avoid taking potent painkillers altogether. When using these herbal mixtures, however, care must be taken to ensure that the steam produced is only absorbed in the mouth. To avoid burns, the herbal vapors should never be inhaled.

In addition, special teas made from peppermint, St. John’s wort and lemon balm are offered as a simple household remedy to effectively relieve toothache without painkillers. Another popular household remedy for acute toothache is the clove. To avoid taking common painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, a clove should be chewed as close as possible to the affected tooth.

In addition, envelopes filled with heated cloves should help to relieve toothache. In this context, however, it should be noted that toothache that is directly attributable to nerve damage (in the presence of pulpitis) can even be aggravated by the highly irritating clove juice. Pulpitis is an inflammation of the dental pulp.

Since toothache can generally be attributed to the presence of inflammatory processes, high-proof alcohol can also be used as a household remedy. However, the affected patient should not drink this, but only rinse the oral cavity with it. Alcohol can also cause toothache.

Beyond that warm bulbs are not only suitable for the Linderung of ear pain. Wrapped in a thin kitchen towel, the heated onions can be placed on the cheek in the area of the aching tooth. Onion vapours are supposed to help to relieve the toothache without the need for additional painkillers.

Pregnancy

Paracetamol is the painkiller of choice during pregnancy. It does not matter what kind of pain it is. The advantage of the active ingredient paracetamol is that it can be taken during pregnancy without any restrictions if the dosage is permitted.

Nevertheless, it should be noted in this context that this active substance is also able to enter the child’s organism via the umbilical cord. For this reason, high doses that are taken over a longer period of time should be avoided during pregnancy. An overdose or even the abuse of this painkiller can lead to severe liver damage to the unborn child already during pregnancy.

The use of aspirin (ASA, acetylsalicylic acid), however, is strongly discouraged during pregnancy. The reason for this is the fact that the active ingredient is able to close an important bypass in the fetal bloodstream (Ductus Botalli) prematurely. In addition, salicylates such as aspirin have an inhibitory effect on contractions.

Painkillers containing the active ingredient ibuprofen should also not be taken in case of toothache during pregnancy. Since ibuprofen also has a decisive influence on the closure of the ductus botalli and the onset of labor, this painkiller should not be used after the 30th week of pregnancy at the latest. In general, painkillers should never be taken during pregnancy, regardless of the active ingredient, for personal reasons. In order not to endanger the well-being of the expectant mother and the unborn child, any intake of painkillers must be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist.
