Household remedy against a purulent tonsillitis

A purulent tonsillitis speaks for the bacterial infestation of a primarily viral tonsillitis. One speaks then also of a hyper- or superinfection. This is usually accompanied by severe throat and swallowing difficulties, severe pain and even shortness of breath.

The body can get better by strengthening its immune system and actively fighting the bacterial pathogens. The immune system can be strengthened by alternating baths and vitamin preparations. Heat or cold wraps can also alleviate the symptoms.

However, a purulent tonsillitis is already an advanced stage where antibiotic therapy should definitely be considered. It should also be remembered that the bacteria are not only strictly limited to the tonsils, but also reach the whole body via the lymphatic and bloodstream. Although a local application of home remedies can relieve the symptoms in the short term, it does not replace a systemic therapy.

Home remedies suitable for children

Due to the not yet fully developed immune system, tonsillitis is particularly common in children.Treatment for tonsillitis should always be carried out in consultation with the pediatrician or family doctor, especially for children. The complications that can arise from inadequate treatment without medical care represent a not inconsiderable risk. Nevertheless, there are some home remedies that are also or especially suitable for children to treat tonsillitis.

For example, children and adolescents should not take Aspirin® (active ingredient: acetylsalicylic acid) because dangerous complications (Reye’s syndrome) can occur. These can lower the body temperature by up to one degree. Because tonsillitis is often accompanied by difficulty swallowing and sore throat, sufficient fluid intake is a common problem, especially in children.

It can be helpful to suck an ice cube to reduce the pain a little and at the same time supply fluid. However, you should be very careful not to eat too many ice cubes, as cooling can slow down the healing process.
