How long does heartburn last during pregnancy?
Heartburn occurs during pregnancy, especially during the last trimester. Here the pressure in the abdominal cavity, which is caused by the growth of the child, is greatest. Heartburn usually stops a few days after birth.
Then the pressure from the abdominal cavity has disappeared and the hormone levels slowly drop. But heartburn is also a common symptom in non-pregnant women. If it persists even after pregnancy, an extended diagnosis can be useful and/or medication can be taken that inhibits the production of stomach acid and thus causes a significant decrease in heartburn.
How dangerous is heartburn during pregnancy?
Occasional heartburn during pregnancy is in most cases distressing for the patient, but not dangerous for the pregnant woman or child. Only when heartburn occurs very often over a long period of time can stomach acid seriously attack and damage the mucous membrane of the esophagus. In these cases, drug therapy is necessary to prevent permanent damage to the mucous membrane or bleeding.
Rising stomach acid can also damage the enamel of the teeth. It is important to note that newly occurring heartburn during pregnancy can only very rarely lead to these complications. A consultation with the treating gynaecologist can and should take place, however.
Heartburn during pregnancy at night
Many pregnant women with heartburn suffer from it, especially at night. This is because the pressure on the stomach increases when lying down and stomach acid can easily enter the esophagus. It is helpful to either sleep with the upper body slightly raised or on the left side.
A calming tea can also help. Many patients also report that it is helpful not to go to bed on an empty stomach. A small meal should be eaten at least three hours before going to bed. If heartburn occurs frequently at night, it may also make sense to take the appropriate medication in the evening. Please take only one heartburn medication in consultation with your doctor or pharmacist.
