Impure skin/pimples
Impure skin or pimple formation during pregnancy are also due to the hormonal changes. Overproduction of sebaceous glands occurs not only on the scalp, but also on the rest of the skin. The overproduction of sebum leads to a blockage of the sebaceous glands.
The sebaceous glands become inflamed and cause pimples to develop. In addition, bacteria can multiply better on inflamed sebaceous glands, which can ultimately lead to pus pimples. The good news is that sebum overproduction decreases again after pregnancy and mothers can hope for cleaner skin and normal hair after giving birth.
Diagnosis
With greasy hair it concerns a gaze diagnosis, which does not necessarily have to be made by a doctor. However, if a woman suffers from oily hair during pregnancy, it is still advisable to consult a doctor (for example a dermatologist or, if necessary, an endocrinologist). In addition to the hormonal fluctuations that exist during pregnancy, this doctor can identify any additional causes for oily hair and thus advise the affected person individually on how to care for their hair.
Oily hair during pregnancy is caused by changes in the hormonal balance of the pregnant woman, which is why a causal therapy is not possible. If a pregnant woman suffers from oily or dry hair, there are nevertheless some treatment approaches that can at least improve the symptoms. If oily hair is present during pregnancy, it is recommended to first wash the hair at regular intervals (but not too often) to rinse the sebum out of the hair.
Washing the hair in the morning is particularly effective, as the sebaceous glands produce most of the sebum during the night. Lukewarm water should be used, as hot water stimulates sebum production in the sebaceous glands. Gentle care products should also be used when washing the hair.
During or after washing the hair, a scalp massage can help to remove the sebum from the scalp. After a scalp massage, the hair may initially look greasy again, as the sebum is pressed out of the sebaceous glands. However, if scalp massages are used regularly, the sebaceous glands are regulated and the overall sebum production is reduced.
Afterwards, the hair may be brushed, but frequent hair brushing should be avoided during the day, as the sebum on the scalp is distributed in the hair and makes the hair look greasy. If the hair becomes greasy again despite shampooing, the use of dry shampoo, baby powder or healing earth can help. Drug therapy, for example with the hormone estrogen, is not recommended for oily hair caused by pregnancy.
For dry hair, mild shampoos, as well as conditioners and hair treatments should be used when washing the hair. These products should not contain alcohol or fragrances, as these further dry out the hair and scalp. Also, the use of olive oil can help with very dry hair. Even with dry hair, scalp massages are recommended, as they can stimulate blood circulation in the scalp. Since dry hair can break easily, the hair should not be brushed too often.
