Infectious diseases and inflammations

An abscess is a collection of pus under the skin, in this case under the skin of the scrotum. It is often caused by an inflammation of hair follicles. The skin of the scrotum is reddened, swollen, overheated and painful.

The treatment consists of an operative relief of the abscess. If one does not act early enough, there is a possibility that a Fournier’s gangrene may occur as a complication. This is a soft tissue infection that can become life-threatening.

The inflammation of the testicles is most often caused by the mumps virus. However, it can also be caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites or non-infectious, e.g. by an accident. The scrotum is usually reddened, swollen, overheated and painful on one side.

Pain when urinating or fever can also occur. Since testicular swelling is relatively unspecific and can also occur in other clinical pictures, further diagnostics should be carried out. In the case of a confirmed inflammation, it helps to elevate the scrotum, cool it and have its course regularly checked by a urologist.

Epididymitis can be the complication of a sexually transmitted disease, a bacterial or viral infection, or can also occur as part of a delayed urinary tract infection. Other reasons can be a violent impact on the testes or a so-called autoimmune reaction. The affected person usually complains of unilateral pain in the testicles.

The scrotum is reddened on the corresponding side, slightly swollen and slightly warmed compared to the other side. The doctor uses an ultrasound machine and the laboratory values of a blood sample to confirm the diagnosis. As a self-test the patient can lift the testicle.

If the sensation of pain decreases as a result, this is an indication of the presence of testicular or epididymitis. The treatment consists of elevating the testis and discreet cooling of the testis. Antibiotics as well as anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs such as ibuprofen are available to fight the inflammation. Get more detailed information here: Epididymitis
