Intercostal neuralgia and sports

Depending on the type of sport and technique performed, physical activity has a great influence on the body and can be responsible for a number of different complaints. Intercostal neuralgia is no exception. For example, when individual muscle groups are strained, nerves can become trapped and thus cause pain in the ribs.

Sudden movements or blows to individual structures can also cause damage to structures such as muscles and nerves, as well as bones, and lead to the symptoms of intercostal neuralgia. However, the phenomenon known as “side stinging”, which often occurs during endurance sports, has nothing to do with intercostal neuralgia. It is a temporary phenomenon which, according to current theories, is caused either by an overload of the diaphragm or a lack of blood supply to the spleen or liver.
