When unwanted hair sprouts on a woman’s face, the so-called lady’s beard, it is an unpleasant phenomenon and one of the taboo subjects in our society.
What is a lady’s beard?
A lady’s beard is the term used to describe body hair on a woman’s face, comparable to a beard on men. This phenomenon can be more or less pronounced from a few hairs to a lush lady’s beard. The lady’s beard affects 20-30% of women. The tendency to lady’s beard can be genetic, but also have hormonal causes.
Causes
Another method of removing the lady’s beard is hot or cold wax strips. Here, as with epilation, the hair roots are completely removed as well. A lady’s beard is an unpleasant thing for the affected women and a blemish. The causes of a lady’s beard can be different. One of the main factors is a hormonal imbalance between female and male hormones. This process starts with menopause in many women. An excess of male hormones can be caused by ovarian diseases or diseases of the adrenal glands. In this case, androgens are increasingly produced. There are also drugs that disturb the natural balance, such as cortisone. If the lady’s beard already appears in adolescence, the cause is more likely to be in the genes. In very rare cases, a tumor can be the cause.
Diagnosis and course
For the affected women, the lady’s beard is always very unpleasant, especially if the hair sprouts very strongly. There are several ways to remove the lady’s beard, but first the cause should be clarified by a doctor. Because the procedures to remove the lady’s beard can be painful and irritate the skin. Women of childbearing age in particular should definitely have themselves examined, because in them the facial hair can also be an indication of unwanted childlessness. The clarification should be carried out by a gynecologist. Blood tests can be used to determine the hormones and thus a hormonal imbalance can be detected and successfully treated. A lady’s beard is also a cosmetic problem for the affected women, from which they suffer greatly, because everyone can see the face. Especially women with strong beard growth suffer from it. This often leads to severe depression and even social isolation. Not every woman can deal with it confidently, especially since the lady’s beard is also considered a beauty flaw. If it is present, it tends to be hidden or eliminated by various methods.
Treatment and therapy
Depending on the cause of the lady’s beard will be the treatment. For hormonal causes, hormones are prescribed to correct the imbalance. For other causes, the hair must be removed mechanically. This is done in several ways:
The simplest and least time-consuming option is shaving the hair. However, it must be repeated regularly because of stubble formation. Plucking offers the advantage that the hair root is also removed and regrowth takes longer, but it is also painful and only recommended for a few hairs. Many women opt for epilation. With an epilator, the hair roots are removed from the skin, but it is also usually very painful. Another method is hot or cold wax strips. Here, as with epilation, the hair roots are completely removed as well. A strip of wax is placed on the skin and then jerkily removed. This method is also uncomfortable, painful and can severely irritate the skin. Depilatory creams are applied to the affected areas and after a short time of exposure, the skin is cleaned and the hair is gone. However, all these presented methods have the disadvantage that they help only in the short term and must be repeated often so that no hair is visible. A longer removal is promised by new methods with laser or flash light. Here, however, it should be taken into account that, on the one hand, lasers can overheat the skin, and on the other hand, laser technology does not work on light-colored hair.
Prevention of lady’s beard
You cannot prevent a lady’s beard because the causes are either genetic or hormonal. The only thing that can be done is to seek an investigation into the causes. Otherwise, you can only treat the lady’s beard with the presented procedures.
