Lantus®

Introduction

The one in Lantus® 100I. E.ml SoloStar prefilled syringe is insulin glargin. This insulin is modified insulin which is produced by genetic engineering using microorganisms and, compared to human insulin, has a long-lasting and evenly blood sugar-lowering effect.

Lantus®may only be used according to a doctor’s prescription and the therapy is subject to regular medical check-ups. Lantus® is available as an injection solution, as a cartridge and also as a ready-to-use pen/finished syringe. The physician determines which potency and dosage form is suitable for the individual patient.

Field of application

Lantus® is used as a ready-to-use syringe for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults, adolescents and children from the age of 2 years.

Contraindications

Lantus® must not be used if there is an allergy (hypersensitivity) to insulin glargin or other components of the Lantus® pre-filled syringe.

Special Safety Instructions

Therapy with insulin must be carried out under medical supervision by a doctor, pharmacist or medical personnel. The prescribed dosage, the recommended diet and physical activity, as well as regular monitoring (blood/urine tests) must be adhered to in order to achieve optimal therapeutic success.

Notes for travel/holiday planning

It is important to have precise instructions for the treatment of possible hypoglycemia. This can be explained by the treating doctor. Before a longer trip is undertaken, the following questions should be clarified:

  • Insulin availability in the country visited
  • Possible stock of insulin and syringes
  • Correct storage of the medication during the trip (caution temperature! )
  • Meal times and insulin administration during the trip
  • Consideration of a possible time change (time zone change)
  • Health risks in the country visited
  • Possible measures in case of feeling ill/unwell

Special situations during treatment with insulin

In the event of major injuries or illness, the blood sugar level can rise, making a higher dosage of insulin necessary. If not enough food is eaten, the blood sugar level can drop and lead to hypoglycemia. In these cases, a doctor must be called early.
