Liposuction: Treatment, Effect & Risks

Liposuction is a special cosmetic surgery for people who want to remove fat from their individual bodies in certain areas. For liposuction, individuals should have excellent health, elastic as well as firm skin as well as moderate or light body weight.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a special cosmetic surgery for people who want to remove fat from their individual body in certain areas. Liposuction represents a surgical procedure that locally removes increased fat tissue cells (lipomatosis). By means of this liposuction, defined fat deposits within the individual problem areas are thus to be eliminated, so that a significant contour improvement is achieved. Such liposuction is usually performed due to an aesthetic indication. Alternatively, this procedure can also be used to remove benign fatty tissue tumors (lipoma). Liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia as well as under general anesthesia. The selected anesthesia depends on the amount of fat and localization of the fatty tissue to be removed. The wish of the particular patient and the recommendation of the attending physician are further reasons for choosing a special anesthesia. Small deposits of fatty tissue usually only undergo liposuction under local anesthesia.

Function, effect and goals

The most common liposuction is performed on the legs of women, for example. Here, the unsightly dents of cellulite (orange peel skin) as well as the “riding pants” on the thighs are to be removed. Also extremely popular is the entire area of the abdomen, hips and buttocks. For men, the abdominal area is at the top of the popularity scale. This is followed by liposuction of the masculine fat breast (pseudogynecomastia/lipomastia), which can be caused by overeating or hormonal disorders. (See also: Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement)).

Through liposuction to a new zest for life! Lipodystrophy is an uneven distribution of individual fat tissue, which is very often due to genetic causes and is therefore independent of certain lifestyle habits, diet or sports activities. The goal of liposuction is therefore to permanently reduce or completely remove excess fat deposits. By means of liposuction, almost all areas of the body can be treated. However, liposuction alone is not enough to give the respective body a new aesthetic shape. Every affected person should remember that liposuction is not an exclusive alternative to lose weight comfortably and easily. Moreover, liposuction is not suitable for extremely overweight people. A few years ago, there was only liposuction. Nowadays, innovative techniques allow to model the fat tissue. This has led to the creation of new terms such as lipofilling, lipoplaning and liposculpture as well as lipoforming. Liposculpture means the shaping of the respective body at the same time as liposuction. It can be performed without problems on several areas of the body such as buttocks, abdomen or upper and lower legs, on the knee as well as on arms or breasts as well as on the neck or chin. Nowadays, there are several options available for liposuction. These include, for example, traditional liposuction, ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL method), liposuction using a vibrating cannula (PAL method) and water jet assisted liposuction (WAL method). Whereby the anesthesia during liposuction depends in each case on the extent as well as the size of the areas to be suctioned.

Risks, side effects and dangers

Liposuction always involves certain risks, wherever it is performed, since it is a surgical procedure. This risk should not be underestimated in any case, as it may already appear during the local anesthesia as well as in a general anesthesia, due to possible allergic reactions. Complications can occur, for example, of an aesthetic nature, with the formation of dents and steps, asymmetric deformations or hyperpigmentation. From a surgical point of view, liposuction can have even more serious side effects. Thus, perforation injuries or hematomas as well as thromboses, embolisms and even infections may occur. Another risk is also skin sagging after liposuction. Although wrinkled skin areas can be tightened, this again requires a surgical procedure and further weakens the body.
