The measures recommended below are for seizure prophylaxis.
General measures
- Nicotine restriction (refraining from tobacco use).
- Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
- Limited caffeine consumption (max 240 mg of caffeine per day; equivalent to 2 to 3 cups of coffee or 4 to 6 cups of green/black tea).
- Avoidance of psychosocial stress
Nutritional Medicine
- Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
- Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
- A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
- Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
- High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
- Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
- Adherence to a low-salt diet:
- When buying food, pay attention to ingredient list: “soda, sodium, salt, Na” indicate table salt
- Spice mixtures usually contain table salt
- Do not add salt to canned products and ready meals
- Prefer fresh and frozen vegetables – they do not contain table salt
- Unsalted nuts instead of salted ones
- Salt dishes only at the end of preparation
- Remove salt shaker from the table
- When eating out, ask for low-salt preparation
- Diet rich in:
- Vitamin C, coenzyme Q10
- Adherence to a low-salt diet:
- Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis

Complementary treatment methods
- Local middle ear hypertension therapy using Meniett pump (for this purpose, a tympanic tube must be placed on the affected ear; the aim of the therapy is to reduce endolymph hydrops (increased occurrence of fluid) through the application (use) of pressure pulses and thus preventively, i.e. preventively, to prevent the vertigo attacks) – effectiveness in vertigo complaints of patients; reduces both the number of days of vertigo and vertigo attacks [= 2nd stage of therapy; 1st + 4th stage of therapy see below Drug therapy; 3rd stage of therapy: see below “Surgical therapy”].
