Mumps (Parotitis Epidemica): Prevention

Mumps vaccination as a combination mumps-measlesrubella (MMR) or mumps-measles-rubella varicella (in childhood) vaccination is the most important and effective preventive measure. Furthermore, to prevent parotitis epidemica (mumps), attention must be paid to reducing risk factors.

Behavioral risk factors

  • Avoid contact with ill persons during the phase of infection. This phase begins, however, already circa one week before the appearance of the characteristic swelling of the parotid gland (parotid gland) and exists up to nine days after their appearance.
  • Poor hygiene especially in places with large numbers of people such as schools, kindergartens.

Note: exposure prophylaxis is not very successful.

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)

Post-exposure prophylaxis is the provision of medication to prevent disease in persons who are not protected against a particular disease by vaccination but who have been exposed to it. For more information, see “Drug therapy.”
