Pain during a hip prosthesis operation

Whether and to what extent pain occurs after the operation for the implantation of the hip joint prosthesis depends on several different factors: on the one hand, on the type and extent of the operation, although in the meantime almost without exception the minimally invasive approach via an approx. 8-10 cm long skin incision laterally above the hip joint is chosen (anterolateral approach). The advantage of this approach is that neither muscles nor tendons have to be cut on the way to the hip joint, so that the healing process is faster, less complicated and less painful. In most cases, therefore, there is little, sometimes no pain after the operation.

With moderate pain medication, most patients are absolutely pain-free after a few hours, or at the latest after 1-2 days – except for a slight pain from the scar. If the pain continues well beyond the second day of the operation or even gets worse in the course of the operation, this can be a sign of complications, such as infections, prosthesis loosening, calcification in the hip muscles, adhesions or adhesions and hip luxation.
