Pain in the back of the hand when bending

In general, when bending the hand, various structures such as nerves, tendons or vessels can be compressed and cause pain in the back of the hand. A common reason for complaints when bending the hand is the compression of the median nerve, one of the three major nerves of the hand and arm, on the inside of the wrist. If this nerve is already inflamed, flexion causes increased constriction and pressure on it.

This leads to unpleasant pain in the back of the hand. This inflammation can be acute, but also chronic. Another reason can be the degeneration or arthrosis of the wrist and bones of the hand and their joints.

During movements in the wrist, such as strong bending, the worn joint surfaces rub against each other and cause pain to the person affected. Inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis) and irritation of the tendons (tendinosis), as well as inflammation of the tendon sheaths (tendovaginitis) in the hand can also cause pain in the back of the hand when bending. A so-called ganglion (ganglion) also causes pain in the back of the hand in many patients. These ganglions are often found on the back of the hand and can also push off nerves and vessels. If the wrist is bent strongly, a feeling of pressure and pain can occur.

Many secretaries and other people who work long and hard on the computer can suffer hand irritation. This is called “Repetitive Strain Injury Syndrome”. The monotonous and constantly repetitive movement irritates the wrist or even the small joints in the metacarpals and causes inflammation.

Since the movement usually affects not only the hand, e.g. the elbow and shoulder joint can also be affected by the irritation and pain. Also affected are groups of people who perform stereotypical activities that are repeated over a longer period of time, e.g. assembly line workers or cashiers. The therapy of choice in the short term is the protection and relief of the affected joint with a bandage.For the long-term course it is important that the person concerned changes his or her work or activity sequence in such a way that the complaints are no longer promoted if possible.

When working at the PC, it is recommended to use a palm rest for the mouse and the keyboard, since this way the position of the hand is more natural and ideally does not provoke further irritation. In addition, breaks from activity should be taken and exercises for the hands should be performed. A doctor should be consulted for more precise diagnosis and treatment.
