Pain in the groin when coughing

If pain occurs when coughing in the groin region, this may indicate a hernia in the groin (inguinal hernia). In this case, the outer part of the peritoneum protrudes through a gap in the abdominal wall. The hernial sac may contain organs of the abdominal cavity such as parts of the intestine. As a result of an increase in pressure in the abdominal cavity caused by coughing or even pressing, the hernial sac bulges through the gap in the abdominal wall and pain is caused in the affected region. Therefore, an inguinal hernia is often diagnosed in the context of diseases that are accompanied by a severe cough. The treatment of an inguinal hernia consists of a surgical closure of the hernia gap in the abdominal wall.

Pain when coughing during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the uterus increases in volume immensely. The uterus is supported by connective tissue, muscles and ligaments. These structures are greatly stretched by the increase in volume of the uterus.

Movements of the child or movements of the pregnant woman can lead to so-called maternal ligament pain in the abdomen and in the groin and cruciate ligament area. Also sneezing or coughing can cause maternal ligament pain. Mother volume pain should be however delimited from premature contractions.

In the case of premature contractions, in addition to the wave-like pain, the abdomen becomes harder and harder and then soft again. A cold, even if accompanied by coughing, usually has no negative effects on the unborn child, even if it occurs during pregnancy. However, medication should only be taken after consulting a doctor.
