Pain | The root canal treatment on the incisor

Pain

Even before the root canal treatment you are burdened with unpleasant pain, which can still occur after the treatment. This does not mean that there is something wrong with the filling or that the treatment has failed, but they are part of the healing process. During the treatment you will not feel any pain except a feeling of pressure due to the anesthesia. The noises and forces on the tooth caused by the treatment prove to be unpleasant in the treatment situation.

The anesthesia prevents the pain from being transmitted to the brain. In very rare cases the healing process is completely painless. The body begins to regenerate and the healing of the wound is associated with pain, but the intensity of the pain is less than with an untreated tooth.

The area around the tooth has been heavily stressed by the treatment. The tooth and tissue may also be damaged by irritation. The duration of the pain cannot be determined exactly, but it is usually limited to a period of a few days.

Only in special cases do they last for weeks or even months. Swelling and especially pain when biting together are not uncommon in the first days. To make the pain more bearable, painkillers such as ibuprofen can be taken in consultation with the doctor.

Ibuprofen has the advantage over paracetamol that it not only relieves pain but also has an anti-inflammatory effect. Paracetamol is the drug of choice during pregnancy. If the pain does not subside even after a longer period of time, a follow-up check is recommended. Bacteria may have entered the canal again and caused another inflammation. In this case a revision of the root canal filling is initiated.

Complaints after the treatment

If the pain on the affected incisor does not subside even after a longer period of time, a visit to the dentist is recommended. As a rule, check-ups are scheduled anyway. It can happen that the treated tooth is again affected by an inflammation, because germs have gotten inside through a leaky filling or bacteria have remained in the canal and have not been completely removed.

If this is the case, the filling is removed and the treatment is carried out again (revision) and finally the tooth is filled again. The reason can also be an overfilling of the root canal beyond the root tip. In this case, too, a new filling may be necessary. In case of uncertainties or problems, the dentist should be consulted immediately, because the earlier a problem is recognized, the easier it can be treated and consequential damages can be avoided.
