Perenterol®.

Introduction

Perenterol® is a drug that can be used to treat diarrheal diseases and acne as well as to prevent and treat travel diarrhea. It consists of certain types of yeast (Saccharomyces boulardii), which are prepared in capsule form. The yeast fungi thus reach the gastrointestinal tract and can settle in it.

This inhibits the multiplication of pathogens and supports the natural intestinal flora. Diarrheal diseases can be attenuated by using this probiotic. However, if the symptoms are persistent or very severe, a doctor should be consulted for further clarification. Perenterol® is used for children from two years and adults. For diarrheal diseases in children under two years of age, a doctor should always be consulted.

Indications

Perenterol® is used for the accompanying treatment of prolonged acne, acute diarrheal diseases and for the prevention and therapy of travel diarrhea. Also people who are fed via a tube can receive Perenterol® for the prevention of diarrhea.

Effect

Perenterol® is a probiotic, i.e. a preparation consisting of living microorganisms. It concerns certain yeast fungi of the genus Saccharomyces boulardii. The yeast fungi enter the patient’s gastrointestinal tract through oral absorption of the capsules and are released there.

In this way, they can colonize the mucous membranes of the intestine. Pathogenic flora is thus suppressed, as it receives less nutrients due to the high number of yeast fungi and is subsequently displaced. This promotes the rebuilding of a healthy intestinal flora and inhibits the multiplication of pathogenic (disease-promoting) pathogens. Perenterol® also neutralizes bacterial toxins and has an immunostimulating and anti-inflammatory effect.

Side effects

Various side effects can occur during therapy with Perenterol®. A common side effect under Perenterol® therapy is flatulence. Allergic reactions can also occur, which can manifest themselves for example as skin rash (hives, urticaria), itching and swelling of the skin and mucous membrane.

In the worst case, this can lead to swelling of the mucous membranes in the area of the throat, which can lead to obstruction of the airways with a risk of suffocation. Allergic shock is also possible. Since Perenterol® is a living microorganism, patients with a severely weakened immune system may experience a migration of the yeasts through the intestinal wall with a subsequent systemic infection.

In this case, the yeast fungi enter the bloodstream and cause a fungal infection spread throughout the body. If side effects occur, Perenterol® should be discontinued immediately and a physician consulted. This is especially true for swelling in the facial area, which should always be monitored by a physician, as life-threatening swelling in the throat area can lead to shortness of breath.
