- Symptomatic therapy, i.e., symptom-based treatment; causal (cause-related) therapy is not possible for poliomyelitis (polio).

Postexposure prophylaxis (PEP)
Post-exposure prophylaxis is the provision of medication to prevent disease in individuals who are not protected against a particular disease by vaccination but have been exposed to it.
Indications (areas of application)
- All contacts of poliomyelitis sufferers (regardless of vaccination status).
Implementation
- Post-exposure vaccination with IPV (inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine) without delay.
- Immediate comprehensive identification and determination of measures by the health authority.
A secondary case is cause for latch vaccinations with IPV. In addition, determination of further measures by order of the health authorities.
