Prednisone is available in tablet form from several manufacturers (Prednisone Galepharm, Prednisone Axapharm, Prednisone Streuli). Lodotra sustained-release tablets were approved in 2011.
Structure and properties
Prednisone (C21H26O5, Mr = 358.4 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It is a prodrug of prednisolone.
Effects
Prednisolone (ATC A07EA03, ATC H02AB07) has anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antiproliferative, and immunosuppressive properties, among others.

- Allergic diseases
- Rheumatic diseases
- Severe skin diseases
- Adrenal insufficiency in combination with a mineralocorticoid
- Severe eye disease
- Liver and gastrointestinal diseases
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Cancers
