Pregnancy/nursing period | Sulfasalazine

Pregnancy/nursing period

In general, pregnancy during therapy with sulfasalazine should be avoided if possible. Especially in the first third of the pregnancy, damage to the child cannot be excluded. Women who are/will become pregnant under sulfasalazine therapy must take folic acid, as its absorption is reduced by the drug.

However, folic acid is essential for the development of the unborn child, so that adequate intake is essential. In principle, the baby may be breastfed despite therapy with sulfasalazine. The doctor treating the baby should weigh up the risks and benefits.
