Prognosis and prophylaxis of the shock

General note

You are on a subpage “Prognosis and prophylaxis of shock“. General information on this topic can be found on our Shock page.

Prophylaxis

If the cause of a shock is an injury or contact with allergenic substances, prevention is of course difficult. However, the patient himself cannot contribute anything in this case.

  • Gentle OP and anaesthesia technology
  • A high standard of hygiene in the hospital or at the doctor’s and
  • Sufficient and timely replacement of blood during surgery with blood loss

Prognosis

If the shock is recognized in time and at an early stage and if action is taken promptly (shock position, volume replacement, etc. ), organ damage and late effects can be avoided. However, every patient who has reached the stage of a manifest (clearly recognizable) shock is at high risk of death and has a correspondingly poor prognosis.

In an unfavorable constellation, a shock leads to so-called multiple organ failure, i.e. the failure of vital organs and the potential death of the affected person. In the case of severe septic shock, for example, the mortality rate is 40-60%.
