Prognosis | Surgery for a nasal bone fracture

Prognosis

As a rule, nasal bone fractures have a good prognosis, so that a satisfactory result, both esthetically and functionally, can be achieved. However, it is often only possible to make an accurate assessment after a few weeks when the nose has swollen. If deformations and obstructions to breathing have occurred, further corrective surgery can be performed after some time.

After the surgery

After the operation the nose is very sensitive. To avoid complications, it must be protected at all costs. If possible, the patient should not blow his or her nose for several days in order not to damage the freshly operated structures.

When sneezing, the mouth should be opened particularly wide. The head should not be bent forward. Heat effects (e.g. when bathing) on the nose should also be avoided.

In general, physical strain or even violent effects on the face (e.g. during sports) should be avoided. It is recommended to lie on your back when sleeping. Glasses should not be left on the nose for too long, as their weight also puts a strain on the operated nose.

To reduce the swelling, it is advisable to gently cool the eyelids several times a day. However, if complications or excessive pain occur, a doctor must be consulted immediately.
